I believe it was 1984. The 8.8 became available in 1983 on Broncos and F-150s. I've been under a few dozen M7s of all years and have yet to see anything but the 8.8. The axle size is marked on the ID tag under one of the cover bolts.

In believe it was 1986 with the 200 hp engine. I believe 1984-85 had a 7.5.

Guess what? my 1989 service manual includes a section (05-43) for the 7.5" traction-lock differential. The 1991 book does not.
The research continues.

i wanna say that the 8.8 was from 84+ up in the marks too. from there the SVO and Steve Saleen began borrowing from the Mark parts bin for rear ends and axles.

Here's what is a surprise to me: both 7.5 and 8.8 ring and pinion sets are in the current Ford parts catalog for all years of Mark VIIs '84 to '92.
Today at one of our salvage yards I found three M7s; '84, '85, '87. All three had their axle tags and all three were 7.5s and each was a different ratio (3.08, 3.27 and 2.73).
The plot thickens,

I goofed: the '87 is a Continental (4 dr). Sorry

My 1986 LSC has the 8.8 rear. The gear set was a 3.27. I too have never seen anything but a 8.8 rear in a LSC.
