If the MSD distributor has an MSD TFI module, that is very likely the issue.

Try cleaning your ground, had a simular issue with my 6AL. I think it didnt have enough juice to produce a spark when wet fuel was introduced.

I had that problem with my 88 once. Turned out it was a bad tank of gas. It went away after filling up at a different station. I went crazy trying to figure out what it was for a week.

mines bucked on take off and while decelerating down to 1K rpm, it turned out a bad injector.

"SPOUT" open usually means no ECU control over spark timing so whatever your static timing is that will be the timing under all conditions. This could limit the RPM during self test. I don't know how the MSD unit would alter this if at all.
Never give up,

Colin, if I were you I would eliminate the variables.
Rewire it to take the MSD box out of the mix.
If you have an MSD dist. swap the TFI module for a Ford, or maybe even swap in a known good stock dist.
Stock timing is 10 BTC with spout connector out.

I say to bypass all the MSD because -unfortunately- there have been too many instances of MSD parts failing. Ignition boxes, TFI modules, even the electronics within the MSD distributor are failing at an unacceptable rate.
I personally recieved a bad brand new TFI module on a freshly refurbed MSD dist.
So fall back to known good electronics so you can nail down the issue.
